6 Tips for Staying in Shape While Traveling
Summer is finally here and while we're unwinding on the beaches of Tulum and wandering the streets of Rome, traveling can sometimes pull us away from our workout routine. And because our bodies are consistently changing, once we stop working out we begin to lose endurance and the muscle mass we worked so hard for. Admittedly, traveling and working out can be really difficult to balance. The uncertainties of what's available while traveling can make it hard to stay motivated. However, with the right tips you can learn to get the most out of your workout from almost anywhere!
1. Pack a resistance mini band
Mini bands are light weight and take up almost no space in your suitcase. They are great for smaller, floor-based and lower-body conditioning workouts. Use a mini band to add resistance on glute bridges, squats, tricep extensions and bent over single arm rows. Check out Perform Better for good quality mini bands!
2. You are your own gym
If you are in your hotel with limited time, do a bodyweight workout! You can do a mix of lunges, side lunges, squats, glute bridges, push-ups, planks, side planks, tricep extensions, and etc. Choose 5 exercises do 10 reps of each, set a clock for 10 min, & do as many rounds as you can.
3. If you really want some Vitamin D - go outside and exercise!
Go for a run on the beach, climb the stairs of the Eiffel Tower, bike down the Great Ocean Road, or go for a hike in the Grand Canyon. Use the beauty of the outdoors to burn some calories. Ditch the taxis and tour buses. Walk everywhere you go to explore where you are.
4. Book a hotel with a gym
If you prefer a traditional gym workout, make sure to make a reservation for a hotel that has a gym. Then, you can do a workout routine that follows your current program...or just look online, ask your trainer, or a friend for a workout to do in a hotel gym. Need to find a gym close by? Zeamo is a platform that partners with gyms across 45 major U.S. cities and 16 international travel hubs. Use Zeamo to explore gyms near you!
5. Eat Right
When you eat out, look for grilled meats and vegetables. Eating a not so good meal is okay once and a while, but if you are traveling long term look at menus beforehand to make sure the options at that restaurant align with your health goals. Always remember to stay hydrated. We highly recommend traveling with a Hydroflask - a vacuum insulated stainless steel water bottle. These water bottles are not the most light weight bottles, but they will keep your liquids cold for up to 24 hours and hot liquids for up to 6 hours. We also recommend a collapsable water pouch which you can purchase on Amazon. These are very easy to travel with as they take up practically no room and weigh only a few ounces.
