How Brit Stays Fit

We interviewed personal trainer and certified nutritionist, Brittany Adams, with a few fun and interesting questions about her health and fitness lifestyle. Learn more about what Brittany had to say below!

Why did you become a trainer?

Brittany: I grew up as a gymnast and became fascinated with the idea of the human body and how it can be exercised and fueled in order to perform better. This eventually led me to the study of human performance and nutrition as well as it's influence on exercise and sports. Once I decided to make the transition from gymnast to personal trainer I found it to be very simple and natural since I coached throughout college and always helped my friends/family with their exercise and nutrition habits.

Have you always been strong and fit?

Brittany: Growing up as an athlete required me to be conscious of both my health and fitness. However, I do think that I’m in even better shape now than I was in high school. I’m also smarter about how I treat my body and how I train compared to my days as a gymnast.

Who has been the biggest fitness influence in your life?

Brittany: I don’t have any sort of "fitspiration", instead I like to find the things that challenge me. I am always exploring new ways to get outside of my comfort zone. Since retiring from gymnastics, I've accomplished 2 triathlons, a 1/2 marathon and plan on participating in a D10 Decathlon this year. Finding the things that challenge me the most are also the things that influence me most.

What’s your typical workout routine?

Brittany: Most recently I've had a strong focus on running and deadlifting, but most of the time my workouts consist of plyomterics and power movements that transition into strength training.

You’re also certified nutritionist...What’s your favorite thing to eat? (unhealthy and healthy meal)!

Brittany: My healthy go to breakfast is sautéed mixed vegetables with two fried eggs or banana oatmeal pancakes. Favorite unhealthy thing is definitely ice cream!

What's your pre and post workout fuel?

Brittany: Pre-workout snack is usually an apple. For post-workout I typically eat a high protein meal within an hour after working out. Other than that I really don’t have anything specific for a post-workout. I plan my workouts around when I get to eat and I meal prep so that I always have food ready to eat after I’m done working out.

Do you believe in cheat days?

Brittany: If someone is on a strict diet then I believe a cheat meal is ok.  But it's better to have solid eating habits where as if you eat something that's not great for you, you shouldn’t feel bad about it! When I eat my bowl of ice cream I don’t feel guilty about it! I workout and stay healthy majority of the time so I don’t freak out when I do eat something unhealthy.

How do you motivate yourself on days you don’t want to workout?

Brittany: I workout with a friend or I schedule a time and just do it!

Advice for those just starting?

Brittany: Find consistent days and times that work best for your schedule so that you can create a routine. Find an accountability buddy such as a friend, partner or family member. If you’re a newbie talk to a personal trainer to learn how to perform proper exercise movements and ask questions about how to put together workouts if you know you don’t have the funds to continue personal training.
